“Taking Capitalism for Granted”

A Harris poll in March, 2019, revealed 61% of Americans aged between 18 and 24 have a positive reaction to the word, “socialism,” and overall, 39% of Americans are well-deposed toward socialism.

When reading these poll results, several questions come to mind: (1) Did the respondents have to put down their smart phones and their cup of Starbucks coffee in order to respond to the poll questions? (2) Have any of these young people supporting socialism ever lived in a socialist/communist country?

Growing up in America, these young people have never experienced the extreme hardships of past generations. Earlier generations knew how famine and disease could impact their daily existence.  Survival required hard work and tenacity. Luxury items were unknown to the average individual.

Fortunately for the present generations, capitalism has placed life-saving drugs, vaccines, and medical procedures in our life.  Capitalism has created modern farming equipment and techniques so now vast amount of food is produced by approximately 2% of America’s population. Labor-saving devices have resulted in increased revenue and in leisure time that was totally foreign to past generations. A successful innovation has the potential to improve the lives of everyone using that innovation.

Capitalistic ventures require a risk of capital; the incentive for taking on these risks is the possibility of a return of capital plus a profit.  Competition and innovation are both cornerstones of capitalism, which in turn drive down prices for goods and services. Americans enjoy a high standard of living when compared with most other countries. Even citizens who are classified as poor in America have big screen TV’s and cell phones.

Is it possible that the young people age 18 – 24 or the older survey participants who view socialism in a positive light are simply taking capitalism for granted?  Do these people really want to give up the incredibly game-changing and often life-saving products and services that capitalism has provided?  Beware of believing a myth:  Capitalism is responsible for all progress, not socialism or communism. Don’t take capitalism for granted if you want to continue to enjoy the lifestyle afforded to people living in America.
